Crestwood Horror!

Ah, yes.  The Crestwood House monster books from the late 70s and 80s, that every monster kid checked out from their home library over and over (find a monster kid and ask 'em; go ahead, I'll wait ... ... ... see?).  And I was one of 'em.  Each volume told the story of a Universal Monsters movie, offered some background on the origin of the characters, and some follow up summaries of other movies -- Hammer, usually -- based on the monster in question.

I checked out Dracula the most, which should be no surprise (followed by The Wolf Man), and it definitely inspired me to create my own versions of the story, leading, eventually, to my adaptation of Dracula for the stage (available here, from Theatrefolk, or here, on Amazon).

I was never a super fan of Frankenstein when I was a child -- even though I adored Bride of Frankenstein when my sainted mother gifted it to me one Christmas when I was 7 or 8 -- but I do remember reading Crestwood's Frankenstein retrospective at least once or twice.  And hey, it became my first published play!  (Available here from Theatrefolk and here from Amazon.)

And my beloved Wolf Man (although, to be fair, that's Henry Hull in The Werewolf of London, Universal's first foray in to furry man-beasts) ... I'll have to do a werewolf play someday, I suppose ... oooh!  A musical version of An American Werewolf in London!  Yassss!  With SCARY CRAZY PUPPETS!  Somebody give me some money!

DRACULA to premiere soon!

Dracula, starring Claes Bang as the titular Count from Transylvania, is set to debut on Netflix courtesy of the BBC on January 4th ... and I cannot wait.  I've been staying away from reviews and spoilers, but it certainly sounds intriguing.  The novel is one of my favorites, which was why seeing my adaptation for the stage published last summer was such a big deal for me -- something I've dreamed of since childhood.  Dracula has been revived time and again, with occasional success, on the page, the stage, and on the screen.  I've collected a number of images to prepare for its American debut, and I must say, they are exciting.

I've read some reviews that there may be an explicitly queer side to this Dracula, which, as you can guess, won't upset me in the slightest.

WANT WANT WANT WANT ... but so far this edition is only available in the UK.

And, of course, if you'd like to treat yourself to a copy of my adaptation for the stage, click here to pick up Laramie Dean's Dracula for yourself!

DRACULA ... coming soon!

I'm ridiculously excited about the BBC's new adaptation of Dracula from Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat, the creators of Sherlock.  Claes Bang as the legendary Count looks fantastic; according to Netflix, although there's no official release date yet, it will probably air during the holidays.  There will be three episodes, and each will be roughly ninety minutes.

Also ... it looks delightfully queer, which thrills me to death, obviously.
